LGBTQIA+ IN MCLENNAN COUNTY

We here at the McLennan County Democratic Party stand in full support as allies and members of the LGBTQIA+ community in central Texas. We believe strongly in everyone’s right to love who they love, marry who they wish, and be who they are without repercussion. We stand against homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination just as we stand against all forms of discrimination against minority groups.

Nobody told me who to love - love is love! Every Texan deserves their constitutional right to equal protection under the law.
— Mary Duty, McLennan County Democratic Party Chair

A heartbreaking year

According to the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQIA+ advocacy and lobbying group in the United States, 2021 is currently the worst year for anti-LGBTQIA+ legislative attacks in recent history, with 18 bills passed across 9 Republican-controlled states, more than the previous record of 15 bills in 2015 and more than all such bills passed in the last three years combined. Over 250 bills attacking LGBTQIA+ issues have been introduced this year across the country. Texas Republicans introduced 12 bills in 2021 that were explicitly hostile towards LGBTQIA+ issues, ten of which specifically targeted transgender youth:

HB 68 HB 1399 SB 1646

SB 29 SB 373 HB 1458

HB 3455 HB 4042 HB 4043

HB 1424 SB 1674 HB 25

Unfortunately, Texas Republicans were able to pass HB 25. This bill prevents trans students from participating in UIL sports aligning with their gender identity, requiring them to instead compete in sports that align with “the student ’s biological sex as correctly stated on the student ’s official birth certificate.” This bill represents a serious affront to the rights of trans youth in Texas and is part of a broader assault on LGBTQIA+ individuals by Republicans in Texas and across the country. We must continue to be inclusive to and fight for the rights and protections of LGBTQIA+ Texans.
